Dovetails
Math that holds together.
Dovetails are printable, chained math puzzles for grades K through 8 (and a high school review set). We built these as a fun supplement to engage students in their general understanding of mathematical concepts and standards review.
One answer opens the next.
Each Dovetail has ten problems, labeled A through J. The answer to A becomes a number needed for B. B feeds C. The chain runs the length of the page.
When students reach J, their final number answers a clue from history or science. Every answer along the way is a whole number, so students can tell when they are on solid ground.
The page helps students notice.
On an ordinary worksheet, a student can miss a problem and keep moving without knowing it. In a Dovetail, a missed step stops the chain. Students go back, find the error, and keep going. The feedback comes from the work itself, not from a grade.
- 150 Dovetails per grade, roughly one per day of the school year (leaving 30 days for testing, review, etc.).
- Aligned to Common Core standards (noted in the answer key and teacher notes) with attention to multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, and Roman numerals.
- Grade-level history and science clues give the final answer a wider context.
